ESPN analyst and Knicks superfan Stephen A. Smith has a knack for igniting passionate reactions, and his recent comments on the Knicks' Isaiah Hartenstein are no exception.
With starting centers Mitchell Robinson and Jericho Sims sidelined by injuries, Hartenstein has stepped into the spotlight, averaging a respectable 8.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. However, Smith's assessment wasn't glowing.
"They're 26th in defensive efficiency rating," Smith said. "Mitchell Robinson is out, Jericho Sims is out. So, I gotta deal with some dude named Hartenstein at the center spot."
Knicks fans, largely satisfied with Hartenstein's performance, took umbrage with Smith's dismissive tone. They pointed out the team's 2-1 record with Hartenstein as the starting center and argued that judging him after just three games is premature.
This isn't the first time Smith has drawn ire for his commentary. On Christmas Day, during the Suns-Mavericks game, he butchered the pronunciation of Cameroonian forward Tari Enow's name. This incident, coupled with a past mispronunciation of Gabe Vincent's name, has cemented Smith's reputation for being prone to such gaffes.
While Smith's passionate takes and outspoken nature are his trademark, these name blunders can undermine his credibility and alienate fans. Finding a balance between his signature style and respectful accuracy would likely be a welcome change for many viewers.
